Discover Bruges, a UNESCO World Heritage City

Bruges is an outstanding example of a medieval historic settlement that has carefully preserved its historic fabric over the centuries. The city’s original Gothic buildings still form an essential part of its identity.

As one of Europe’s former commercial and cultural capitals, Bruges developed strong cultural links with different parts of the world. The city is also closely associated with the school of Flemish Primitive painting, which has contributed to its international reputation.

For centuries, the canals of Bruges have connected the city to the sea, supporting its wealth and prosperity. International merchants helped develop Bruges into one of the largest Hanseatic cities. In the 15th century, the city flourished as never before.

Large parts of this medieval heritage have remained remarkably intact. Therefore, it is no surprise that the historic city centre of Bruges has been recognised as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

In Wallonia and Brussels, French is the main spoken language. English is widely understood in hotels, restaurants and tourist areas.

Time Zone: In November, Belgium uses the Central European Time zone (CET, UTC+1).

Climate and weather: Belgium has a temperate maritime climate influenced by the North Sea and Atlantic Ocean, with cool summers and moderate winters. During November, temperatures are generally between 8°C and 12°C. Rain is common during this period, so we recommend bringing warm clothing, comfortable shoes and a waterproof jacket or umbrella.

National and international debit and credit cards, including Maestro, Mastercard and Visa, are accepted in most hotels, restaurants and shops. Although card payments are widely used, carrying some cash for smaller purchases can still be useful.

Electricity supply: Voltage in Belgium is 230V at a frequency of 50Hz. Standard European plug types C and E are used. Participants travelling from outside Europe may need a travel adapter for electronic devices.
